Hi Unique,
I’m standing here, in front of this big building, with shaky knees and wet hands. I am 20 years old, but I feel like a 5-year-old child before the first day of school. Somehow today is actually my first day of school, well not exactly, it’s the first day at college. Everything is new, everything is different and yet it’s almost like back then. I close my eyes one more time before I finally go to college. I see myself almost 15 years ago, with a big school bag and an even bigger school cone, I see my first test and I see myself with my reward McSundae with warm chocolate sauce. I can almost taste it and I’m longing for an ice cream. I remember that McDonalds was only okay as a reward, for very good performances and very special moments. Oh yes, sin is sometimes just too beautiful! Just as my journey of thought continues through time, someone jostled me and thus involuntarily pushed me one step closer to my new life.
Whatever, it can’t get that bad, the first day of school was better than expected too.
Just like my first day at school, the first day of college went by pretty fast. Satisfied and relieved, I leave the building and head home. On my way home I pass one of the golden “M’s” and after a short delay I enter the shop smiling. I haven’t been to one of the McDonalds stores for a long time and I’m amazed how much everything has changed. Immediately the smell of warm french fries and burgers rises into my nose, but my aim is the McSundae with chocolate sauce. Luckily, the ice cream is still there, so I can enjoy every single spoon.
McDonalds – An Image Question
When I happily sit here with my ice cream, I wonder why McDonalds has such a bad reputation. I believe that fast food should definitely not become part of regular nutrition too! But sometimes you can and should treat yourself to something. Then what’s the problem?
The question never leaves me and when I leave the restaurant, I hear two girls whispering: “Disgusting, this place! There’s sawdust in the French fries and I don’t want to know what’s in the patties!”
I quickly move on and the yummy McSundae aftertaste gets bitter all at once. I don’t like the girls’ looks.
And suddenly it becomes clear to me: the image suffers above all from the rumours that are spread. Somehow the topic does not let go of me anymore and so start to google at home.
The McBook – The truth about McDonalds
After a short time, I find a film about the history and foundation of the company on the one hand and the brand new book by Alexandra Reinwarth – the McBook on the other.
Since I have already seen the film, which is really interesting and takes a more than surprising turn of events, I’m especially interested in the book.
When I read the short cover text, the book immediately enters the shopping cart and is ordered. I am really curious to see which myths and bizarre facts are revealed. Is there really something about the whispering of the girls or is it all just part of the rumor mill?
A few days later the McBook reaches me and for a long time I devour another book.
Unused knowledge or education gap
Just a few hours after delivery I finished reading the book. I’m surprised how fast that went. But thanks to Alexandra Reinwarth’s casual, entertaining writing style and lots of loving, creative illustrations, time flies by. The book is full of prejudices and absurd rumours. But these are not simply dismissed, no, Reinwarth confronts McDonald staff with all these rumors. The reactions? Well find out for yourself;)
There it is, the new McBook, and when I think about the last few hours, I am satisfied, relaxed, yes, and a bit relieved. The bitter aftertaste of a few days ago is finally dissolving.
The book is not a beautiful painting, it shows good and not so good sides. It takes us into the world of the golden M – a world full of french fries and burgers, but also a world full of interesting facts and absurd rumours.
The book also shows less good facts, but really critical? Well, it’s not really critical. In the end, McDonald’s is and remains a mystery and the truth is somewhere between absurd rumours and perfect campaigns.
I grew up with the junior bag and McSundae ice cream and you?
