Koh Samui sightseeing tips

# 1 Big Buddha

The Big Buddha is probably the most famous and largest landmark of Koh Samui, because the Buddha is 40ft high and this is why you can already see it from the airplane. Although it is so well-known, it does not cost any entrance to see it!

The only condition to see the great Buddha is: take off your shoes! So come early in the morning. Since then the steps are still cool and clean. Otherwise the short way upwards on the heated steps can become rather painful, especially on the red steps.

If you made it up to the top, you will be rewarded with Big Buddha and with a great view.

This sightseeing stop is definitely worth it!

# 2 Wat Plai Leam

Only a few minutes from Big Buddha away is a large temple complex with three different temples – one for the Indian, one for the Chinese and one for the Thai Buddhists. All three temples are active, which means, they are visited by many faithful everyday. Each of the three temples is accessible by its own way and is located in the water just like an island. In the water a lot of fish can be found, which are also allowed to be fed. For only 10 Baht you get a large bowl of fish feed.

This place also does not cost any entrance fee. But again: take off your shoes!

This sightseeing stop is worth it, because next to the Big Buddha the three temples are, probably the biggest Buddhist highlight of Koh Samui sightseeing.

# 3 Grandmother and grandfather

This sightseeing stop is probably the most extraordinary of all, because grandmother and grandfather (Hin Ta and Hin Yai) are stones that look like sex parts.

According to the legend, a married couple died here and then became petrified.

Hin Ta and Hin Yai are especially popular with local tourists because they believe a visit to the rocks increases the fertility.

Is the ride really worth it? Well, I don’t know …

If you still have more time at the end of your tour or if you maybe just pass by, it might be fun 😉

# 4 Secret Buddha Garden

Thanks to our taxi driver we visited the Secret Buddha Garden. This is not a real garden, but a mysterious place with a lot of stone statues and large ghost houses. From Buddhas to snakes to fantasy creatures, a magical world of stone was created here.

The garden is one of the few Koh Samui sightseeing stops that cost entry. However, it’s only 80 Baht which is $2.5 😉

The entrance is used to maintain the garden.

Even if the journey takes a bit longer, it is worthwhile in any case 😉

# 5 Walking Street

Every Friday the night market takes place in Bophut in the Fishermen’s Village and every Sunday in Lamai. In addition to typical souvenir sellers and clothing stalls, there are also many food stalls. Here you can taste super delicious and cheap Thai food.

You don’t need to be afraid, because almost everything is well-boiled or cooked.

Even if it’s really crowded, this experience is definitely worth it.

General information about Koh Samui Sightseeing

Of course you can rent a scooter and visit all the sights. But actually it’s not to safe to drive with a scooter in Thailand. There is also a helmet duty! We had rented a taxi for the whole day, because it is quite hot and so an air conditioning between the sightseeing spots is very comfortable 😉 The taxi should not cost more than 500 Baht (ca. $15) per hour. Talk to the driver bevor you start the tour and try to get a fix price. Otherwise it can happen to you, that you get fooled.

If you’re lucky, your taxi driver will even speak a little bit of English and can tell you something. 😉

After this exhausting day, go back to the pool and then to bed … 😉
