outside it’s freezing cold and although the winter is slowly coming in, my Instagram Feed isn’t full of down jackets and thick hats, no, on the contrary: it’s full of tight hot outfits, full of naked skin.
Since when is a cool style and great beauty tips so much less interesting than pictures with tight bikinis and hot clothes? Are we already so tired of Macarons, little Eiffeltowers and cool street styles that mainly sex draws our attention?
Since when has the focus been on the number of clicks rather than inspiration?
Sex Sells or the price for our body
1. Your body is your capital
Bloggers, or should I better say influencers, have mainly one capital – themselves. Depending on the category, the body is more or less important, although good looks won’t hurt in any department. We are not only copywriters, photographers and editors in one, we are also models. Right? With the omnipresent trend of being forced to become even slimmer, look even better and become even more perfect, one could almost be forgiven for thinking that influencer are the new models – exclusively.
Yes, in principle bloggers are of course also models. But the beautiful thing about blogging is not the reduction to the topic of “modeling”, which means good looks at any price, but the diversity of the product. Actually, we should celebrate that we aren’t obliged to have a height of 1.75m and 90-60-90. At last we have the chance to show so much more than “just” a perfect body – inspiration, creativity, information…
And yet: slender, trained, long blonde waves. Exactly this picture is what we see day in, day out on Instagram. Same, same, instagram.
2. Perfection is the ultimate goal
Smooth, clean baby’s bottom skin and long, slender legs. Plus big breasts, a perfect apple shaped botty and a silky shiny curly mane. Tada, here’s our new It Girl. This is exactly what we see in our feed every day – absolute perfection down to the smallest detail. Hours of work ensure the right light, smooth skin and radiant eyes. A snapshot is no longer a real snapshot.
As soon as something doesn’t seem perfect and thus almost seems unreal, it stands out from the crowd – unfortunately often not positive. But since when has fake perfection become so much better than authentic fallibility?
No one is perfect, even if we like to present ourselves in this way. Well, I admit it: who likes to show mistakes? I don’t mean that no one is allowed to edit his pictures, but a little less would be so much more now and then.
3. Naked skin for even more clicks
So now you look really good, you are slim, have great hair and a nice face. Congratulations, you reached step one. To make your feed really explode, post some hot photos with as little fabric as possible. Aesthetics is only of secondary importance, because this is mainly about sex. Sex sells!
Yes, sometimes I have this feeling when I scroll through my feed. Beautiful lingerie can be beautifully staged – but it can also quickly go into the wrong direction. Often pictures look cheap and so your own feed and reputation is scratched faster than you can say “Sex sells” at all. And to put it bluntly: there is nothing wrong with presenting beautiful underwear or great bikinis from time to time, perhaps also in cooperation with a company!
But when they post new pictures every day with even tighter outfits… well, you know what I mean.
Do we really want to be like this? Do we really only want to be reduced to our body like perfect, but soulless little dolls?
I don’t want that, because I don’t want to be liked for my perfect image editing, but for my personality. I don’t have to be the slimmest, prettiest, best, but I still have to be ME.
More or less sexy, more or less perfect, but me.
